All Health Profession schools expect learning experiences outside academic coursework which build skills important to your preparation for your career. The University of Utah School of Medicine (UUSOM) requires experience in volunteer community service, exposure to clinical medicine, research, demonstration of leadership ability, and evidence of a capacity to handle a significant load of extracurricular activities in addition to academic coursework. Quality and depth of learning experiences are important, not just “checking things off the list”.

For details on UUSOM requirements, see http://uuhsc.utah.edu/som/.

Below, we have listed a few ideas for involvement.

KEEP A LOG, SPREADSHEET, OR NOTEBOOK OF YOUR EXPERIENCES.
